Why are we talking about 2012 NewBorn already? well it's September and in no time the first show of our 2011-12 Season COSTA REHAB will fly by, you will have partied with us and Broadway Understudies at UNDERWORLD and the 2012 NATIONAL NEWBORN FESTIVAL will be here in no time!

The truth behind the matter is we work on "NewBorn" all year round. With each year we learn new ways to polish our flagship program and make it the best development and showcase opportunity we can offer.

Here's how this year works:

1-March 1st through June 1st, we  accepted submissions to be considered for the festival. Artistic Director David Stallings and the committee read through all submissions and request the full plays that most fit our mission and criteria.

2-Full scripts are read by Artistic Director David Stallings and the committee to be considered for the "living room series."

3-Finalists and Semi-Finalists are picked. Finalists are the plays that will move on to the "living room series." Semi-Finalists are the plays that we found promising but for one reason or another will not move on to the next level.

What is the living room series? it is a private reading series (mini private NewBorn if you will) where company actor members have unrehearsed readings of the selected finalists to further discuss the development potential of the piece and how it fits our mission. Only company members and the playwright are allowed at these readings.

4-Winners are selected and move on to be part of the National NewBorn Festival. This year we will host 5 readings and one resident reading by Artistic Director David Stallings. The 5 winning plays will also be eligible to win the Audience Favorite Award selected by our audience, and the Excellence in Playwriting Award bestowed by our Board of Directors.

Change in Audience Favorite Award: past years the winner of the Audience Favorite Award receives a second reading as part of "NewBorn," usually on the last night of the festival. Because the award is selected by the audience attending the readings we don't find out who the winner is until the last moment, making it hard to promote the second read which usually happens the next day. So this year we are trying something new and exciting. The winner of the Audience Favorite Award will receive a second reading by a sister theatre company within the year of "NewBorn." We can't wait to see how this pans out.

Right now we are in Step 3 of the process. We will start our "Living Room Series" this Sunday, September 4th.
We will be announcing this year's finalists and semi-finalists in another post right here on the "news" section, so stay tuned.
